Killeen, TX: Where Freedom Grows

Killeen is where freedom grows, and Killeen itself it growing. The 2009 estimated population for the city was 119,512, representing a 37 percent increase over the 2000 census and making Killeen the 24th largest city in Texas. Despite its growing population, Killeen has maintained a strong sense of community togetherness and support amongst its residents and with Fort Hood.

In 2010 the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood MSA garnered national attention by ranking at or near the top of several national surveys concerning employment. The MSA had the second strongest outlook in the country for hiring, the fourth nationwide amongst all small cities for job growth and was best in the nation among 200 major metropolitan areas for its overall business climate.

Not only a great place to work but the MSA has also proven to be a wonderful place to live. In 2010 residents of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood MSA were first in Texas and 13th in the nation for being satisfied with their well-being and enjoying the highest quality of life, and it was ranked third amongst both military metros and medium metros on the 2010 Best Places for Military Retirement list. In 2011 Killeen was recognized as a Certified Retirement Community by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Children in Killeen get their education from the thirty-one elementary schools, twelve middle schools, four high schools, and four specialized campuses run by the Killeen Independent School District. The teachers currently serving KISD have an average of 9.3 years of teaching experience and 6.9 years within KISD. Class sizes vary throughout the district with a range of 16.4 to 21.5 students per class. Education opportunities for adults abound at Killeen’s Central Texas College and Texas A&M University – Central Texas. In 2010 TAMU-CT broke ground on their new campus, which, when complete, will be equipped to serve 15,000 upper-level students.

Killeen residents can rest assured knowing their health care is in the hands of top-notch professionals at Metroplex Health System, Scott & White, or the numerous smaller clinics. Metroplex is a not-for-profit Christian organization operating the 233-bed, multi-campus facility as a community service to the residents of Central Texas. For the past seven years Scott and White has been ranked among the top 100 hospitals in the country. While their main location is in Temple, they operate a large clinic in Killeen offering a wide range of services that would fulfill almost any health care need.
